Typology of Forms and Facade Elements of Jengki Architecture in Denpasar

This study examines the typology of the forms and facade elements of Jengki Architecture in three selected buildings in Denpasar as a representation of the morphological variations and preservation conditions of the style. This focus was chosen to provide insight into the character of the facades through case studies that will be analyzed in detail. A qualitative approach was applied through field observations, photo documentation, and architectural descriptions that were then analyzed comparatively based on the literature on the characteristics of Jengki Architecture. The results show that the three buildings display consistent Jengki facade elements, particularly steep gable roofs, the presence of sloping wall planes, the use of rosters and air vents, and prominent terraces, but with variations in terms of symmetry, materials, and quality of maintenance. The first building shows a relatively intact and expressive facade composition, the second building displays a contrast between neglected and renovated units, while the third building emphasizes the variation in form and materials across different periods. This study confirms that although limited to three cases, typological readings of the facades can reveal the position of Jengki architecture as an early modern heritage in Denpasar, while also providing a more focused documentation and conservation effort.
